Herbal remedies are medicines made from parts of plants that can be leaves, flowers, or roots. Each part may have different types of chemical constituents and may require different methods of extractions.

Herbs can be used in many ways and taken internally and/or externally. Tinctures and Herbal Teas are just two examples of internal herbal preparations.

We are all familiar with herbal teas. They are formulations made from dried plants and prepared as infusions or decoctions. They have a warming and mild action on the body and can be used to gently support the treatment of various conditions.

Alcohol-based preparations are called tinctures. They are used when certain chemical constituents need to be extracted from the plant using a strong medium such as alcohol. They may have a higher concentration of main constituents and so more active effects.

The job of the trained herbalist will be to safely prepare a balanced formula using either tinctures or dried herbs to support the treatments of various conditions. As any chemical constituents, herbs can have contraindications and interactions with conventional medications. This is why a Medical Herbalist can help to create safe tailored mixes knowing the most appropriate herbs to use after gathering informations from patients about symptoms, body constitution and medical history.
